Removable retainers are typically used for the top teeth and permanent retainers on the lower teeth, but retainer use depends on what is best for your teeth. But recent surveys of practicing orthodontists show that permanent retainers are becoming increasingly popular. In many cases, orthodontists use a combination of both removable and permanent retainers for the best long-term results. But there needs to be a certain amount of tooth surface area for the bonding material to secure the retainer in place. Your orthodontist may also suggest one if you have difficulty adhering to their guidelines for removable retainers. Permanent retainers are often recommended by orthodontists after braces to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original place. It’s attached to your teeth and adjusted to your bite to keep your teeth from shifting or becoming crooked. ![]() Usually, this wire is smooth and solid or has a braided texture. ![]() Hypertrophic scarring can usually be handled well if you come to get it checked on time, but some damage (like gum damage) can't be fixed.Permanent or fixed retainers are made of a metal wire that is glued to your teeth. It goes for the entire period of wearing the piercing, not just for the first month. Playing with the jewelry can lead to hypertrophic scarring around the holes, widening of the piercing canal, damaging the teeth and gums, and damaging the jewelry itself. Replacement isn't necessary because the jewelry we use is made from implant materials so if you get used to a long bar, there's no need to replace it. After that you need to replace the jewelry with a shorter one if you notice the initial bar to be in the way. Healing period for the tongue is approximately 6 weeks. Initial jewelry is always somewhat longer to allow for natural swelling after the piercing process. If your partner is sick (common cold, flu, herpes, etc.), it would be beneficial to avoid kissing for at least the first two weeks because if you get a sore throat, complications with the piercing might occur - healing problems, swelling, etc. Bear in mind that the fresh piercing is a wound and it's easy to catch on bacteria from other bodily fluids. Kissing – for the first week you probably won't feel like kissing because the tongue will be swollen and painful. Put some ice on the tongue and wash with cold water - it will stop the bleeding. Few drops of blood in your mouth can look terrifying when mixed with saliva, but don't panic. The tongue is filled with small capillaries and sometimes the jewelry presses on one of those and bleeding occurs. Light bleeding is normal during the first two weeks after the piercing. It will go back to normal - two months after the piercing at the latest. It's normal to have a somewhat reduced sense of taste, like if you burned your tongue on something hot. Eat slowly to avoid biting on the jewelry. Solid foods can be chopped into smaller pieces so they're easier to chew. Try eating all foods, not just puddings and soups, to keep your immune system running. To reduce pain, use any painkillers that don't interfere with the blood system so as to not cause bleeding from the piercing canal. The lower ball will accumulate some plaque (white layer) with time - it needs to be cleaned occassionally using the toothbrush or (very carefully) a tooth pick. People with weaker immune system might experience some yellow lymphatic fluid from the canal. It's also normal for some hardness of the tongue around the jewelry for the first few days, and the root of the tongue to be painful as well. The ball will create an indentation on the upper side of the tongue - it will disappear once the jewelry is permanently removed. Don't scrub it using the toothbrush because it will irritate the piercing and will do nothing at all for the white layer. Tongue surface will be white after the piercing, because the upper part of the jewelry gets in the way of its natural cleaning by rubbing the palate. We wouldn't recommend chewing tobacco for the first two weeks. scrubbing the tongue using the toothbrushĬigarette smoke won't harm the piercing.alcohol (enhances swelling and bleeding).menthol - mouth wash (if you use it, dilute it to about 50/50), chewing gum (constant chewing can irritate the piercing).
